Green Monday is a fun, affordable, and tasty way to bring about positive change. By swapping meat, eggs, and dairy for delicious plant-based foods every Monday, South Africans can help save farm animals, improve their personal health, and lessen their carbon and water footprints. Green Monday is a global movement promoted by Humane Society International (HSI), and South Africa is one of the first countries where HSI is introducing the concept. Through the Green Monday program, we can help reduce the serious health, environmental and animal welfare problems that stem from raising 77 billion land animals and countless aquatic animals for food each year.
Through the Green Monday movement, foodservice professionals, medical and educational institutions, chefs, dietitians, doctors, public health leaders, environmental organizations, and millions of individuals are growing a healthier, more sustainable food system. We’re preventing cancer, diabetes and heart disease. We’re tackling obesity. We’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions and conserving our water. We’re transforming our colleges, universities, hospitals, schools, correctional facilities, military bases, and more.
Green Monday isn’t a one-size-fits-all program. With the assistance of HSI/Africa, partners are implementing tailor-made programs that suits their operating systems and organizational structures.
By opting for more plant-based foods and simply reducing the amount of animal products we consume and serve, South Africans can improve their health and the health of our environment. It’s about making a difference, one green meal at a time, in order to foster a great life for future generations who will be impacted by the consumption choices we make today.
